February Calendar Journal

Memories of February:

Walking through town, I can see the cherry trees beginning to bloom. Can you believe it?

I watched the birds at the feeder. There were nuthatches, chickadees, towhees, sparrows, woodpeckers, and juncos.

Yesterday, I worked on my bicycle, cleaning it and getting it ready for riding more often.

February had its good days to carry me over some of the challenging days which the latter reflected in some of my journal sketches. The line from Sheryl Crow's song always makes me smile, and I'm sure we all have days when we'd like to say that.

February began well and is ending well, and now I am looking forward to March.

drawing portraits with De Atramentis document inks

pen and ink drawing, 5 x 7 inches

Last week the urge to draw hit me and I focused on drawing portraits with De Atramentis document inks. For Man with a Cape, I started out with yellow to draw the outline and then added darker colors like fuchsia, turquoise and fog grey.

For the female portrait, Girl I, I colored in the background with fuchsia, yellow and a mix of orange.

I love how vibrant these inks stay once they are applied to the paper, even as a wash of color.  Above is Girl with a Pink Collar and I used yellow for her cheeks and fuchsia for her collar.

wishing everyone a good week and joining sunday sketches.

eduardo munez mail art

Back in January, I found out about the Who Is Eduardo Munez project. The idea of writing to a person whose character is formed with each letter really intrigued me.

After a few weeks of brainstorming, I settled on the idea of Eduardo receiving a letter from someone he'd met on a trip. The envelope would illustrate a conversation they had had. Inside the envelope would be something that had to be returned to Eduardo. I'll let you know what was put inside once the project finishes.

I used De Atramentis document inks on vintage typewriter paper and added acrylics to the sail boat to bring it into the foreground. A bit of yellow De Atramentis document ink over the acrylics sails added color as well.

What projects have you been working on or just finished? I have several works in progress that I hope to finish next!

calendar-journal january pages

Can you see the paw prints in the journal page above? For the last three years, I've been walking almost daily down the same path from my house to the local market. Sometimes, midway I run into the strays that live in that area. I've been told they were dumped there a few years ago by someone. Several people in the community feed and care for them. The cats have been neutered by the island's "catch and release" program.

The Tabby cat seems to be the one always out and about waiting to be petted. One evening, I was late walking to the store and it was after dark. Without my realizing, the tabby followed me all the way into town! I had gone to the library then to the bank, and as I was on my way to the store, I heard a meow. It took me a few seconds to recognize that it was the Tabby's familiar meow. As I looked around in the dark, I caught sight of him. My heart dropped as I saw him there in the bank's parking lot, in the dark, amongst the cars.

I walked him back to his area where he lives. He is such a sweetheart, and if my circumstances were different, I'd adopt him and the other two. Since that incident, I am switching up the route that I walk.

Sometimes I don't have anything in mind or sight to draw, so I just have fun writing, doodling and making marks on the page. I'm really liking the calendar-journal I put together. I try to draw and/or write in it daily. Best of all, I get to play with all my fountain pens, dip pens and ink!
