“Practicing an art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow, for heaven's sakes. Now, I mean, I'm talking about singing in the shower, I'm talking about dancing to the radio, I'm talking about writing a poem to a friend--a lousy poem.”
Kurt Vonnegut
I have always known that I am not good at singing but that has never stopped me from singing. I sing when I am doing my art. I sing when I am riding my bicycle or walking to the store. I sing when I am afraid and I sing when I am happy.

February marks two years since my Mother passed away, and I've been spending time remembering her. This journal page pays tribute to her and something she told me one day. She had heard me singing in the other room while I was doing my art. When I joined her later for our lunch, she confirmed I was singing, and said,
"When you were a child, you sang off-key. I never told you. I'd just let you sing."

She went on to say she thought I sounded better now. This memory will forever warm my heart and make me smile.

Thank you, Mom, for giving me the freedom to find my voice and the confidence to express it.
