2015 goals

the lion in winter, alter book

I joined art to the 5th's documented life project for 2015. This project posts a new challenge every week.

At the end of the first day of the new year, I still hadn't settled on what journal to use for this project. As I tried falling asleep and debating what book to use, I remembered that I had altered a book, The Lion in Winter, two years ago. At that time, it was a healing exercise that I was performing by leaving only a few words uncovered by gesso. Each page contains part of a message and when you get to the end of the book, the whole message is understood.

That book has stayed on my book shelf filled with blank, gessoed pages, and the time feels ripe now to use this book as a journal. This weeks prompt is Be Your Own Goal Keeper. The word, Odyssey, came to me as I finished this portrait on a vintage book page from a travel journal. At the lower right, I added a line drawing of a sailboat builder's diagram to further illustrate my theme of journey. This year I am hoping to seek out new adventures and navigate my way through life's twists and turns.
